California Here We Come

I'm getting rather excited about our upcoming trip to California. Husband and I are headed West in early May for 9 fun filled days. I've been perusing my Frommers and the internet to put together an itinerary. This is our first "empty nester" trip and I want it to go well. I'm hoping husband will enjoy himself so much, he'll be anxious to plan another journey.

I've always loved to travel. Many, many moons ago, I was a travel agent and had the opportunity to visit some wonderful spots. However for the last 20ish years or so...shit did I just write 20 years or so...yikes.....we haven't traveled too extensively save for our annual sojourns to the Keys (a semi-local destination) and Orlando. Now we find ourselves with time and funds to be able to see more...spread our wings, just the 2 of us. I'm counting the days.

Starting in San Francisco, we'll tour there and spend 3 nights, then rent a car and head down to the Monterey Penisula and Carmel for 2 nights..continue South to Hearst Castle and Santa Barbara...then end in Los Angeles for 3 nights.

I've got a 1gb memory card in my camera..and plan on snapping tons of photos..which I will undoubtedly post here at some point..I can't remember when I have been so excited about a trip...

Me be envious. Me knows, me knows there's nothing for me to be jealous of. But Me can't help it.

Yeahhh!
I hope you'll have a great time- I know you will :)
My brother is in San Diego and I'd like to visit him before he moves (although, he loves it and may never come East again.)

Leelee- you give me SO much hope for the future. Oh- I hope, when when the time comes- that my husband and I will do exactly the same kind of things...that we will be glad we stuck it out- and not for the kids, or for our families- but for us.
I miss the sweetness of our yesterdays...when there was time to feel connected. I feel so "out there" and alone sometimes. He is working very hard "for us"- and I'm thankful...but reading you gives me a lift- it gives me a cheerful glimpse of our possible future, and for that, I thank you!

Thank you again for the books- I've sent them back to you- along with a few little things. Hope it arrives by Friday- but I've learned not to hold my breath these days! :)

Cora my friend....hope for a future together as the principle 2 again is always what carried me through some tough times. Honestly what marriage doesn't have it roller coaster rides...I bet you can't name one..

Raising children, working hard, building a home and a life together IS difficult..but now..thankfully...there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

Go with your heart especially on those dark days...and covet the ember that's there...there will be time in the future to fan it into a flame again...if you both really want it.

I'm glad I inspired you today. My best girlfriends parents were my inspiration actually. Their love and loyalty and friendship with one another was what I always hoped and tried to mirror in my own marriage. Looks like it is paying off....finally ;-)

I'll let you know when the package arrives...Oh and Ave Maria kind of nailed it for me...she kept looking for something..and it took her a while to realize she had what she needed all along. That's life my friend...just remember what's truly important.

The key to driving south on the Pacific Coast Highway is to avoid the overwhelming impulse to quickly veer right. This is difficult for me, which is why they never let me take the wheel for that stretch of road. Anymore.

ok...so we shouldn't veer right on the PCH...cliffs right?? got it..

all tips and tricks for a successful trip are appreciated.

I just wrote you a dang novelette. Sorry I get so carried away. I do love where I live. If you need more eateries, let me know. I know the cheap and the expensive, the touristy and the not so. I know Chinese, Viet Namese and the traditional. My husband is 6" 5' and he loves to eat out so we have hit quite a few places in town.

Oooo, you are going to have such a great time, especially if you get to meet up with Queen Corn Dog.

Ave Maria -- are you & Cora reading Adrianna Trigiani (sp.?)? I read all of her books. She was born in my neck of the woods, so we consider her a local girl around here.

Leelee, just make sure you're back from CA before Prom Night.:)

YES SJ...Adriana Trigiani..I heard her interviewed on NPR and immediately ordered the first 3 books without ever having heard of her..I devoured them. Yes SW VA...Big Stone Gap..now I want to go there... While I was reading them...I thought Cora might relate to them..so I sent them to her..apparently she enjoyed them too :-)

Yes Ms Corn Dog sent me a ton of awesome info...sights, eateries..even transportation tips...what a doll!!

Not to worry..I'll be home in time for the prom

Sounds very nice, and it has to be an added plus having been a travel agent. I too have a summer trip to California planned, (we are going to see many of the same sights it seems) I am trying to put together a basic itinerary, but for me it is rather difficult, thank goodness for the internet.... we are just starting at the Southern end of Calif and make our way North. I have family all up and down the coast, so can't figure out a way to do it without renting a car and just driving up the whole coast. But we are going to stop along the way, so it will be a leisurely trip. My husband doesn't care to travel, so it is just me, the kids, and my daughters boy friend....it should be interesting. I think your trip sounds more fun actually. haha be

Hey nea, thanks for stopping by! Sounds as if you will be having a nice trip to Cali as well. I found that by checking out some escorted tour company itineraries on the web i.e Globus Gateway, Grayline...I got some great ideas for places to see. I also found that a Frommers guide book has been indespensible for all sorts of info. I've enjoyed making the plans so much..yes, I guess my travel agent experience played a part in that. I loved that job...

I'm sue you will have a wonderful time. Come back and check out my pictures later in May after I return..I will probably ost a photo album..

Thanks again for stopping by. It seems we visit some similar blogs.

Have a nice day!
