American Pie

This afternoon on my way home from work...I heard American Pie..I cranked it up..and sang along as I know every word by heart, who, my age (or thereabouts)doesn't???

The song was not finished when I pulled into my driveway...so I sat there..and sang with Don till it finished.

One doesn't turn off American Pie before it is done...it's just isn't done.

My lawn guys must think I am weird...

I think it's weird that you have lawn guys. Are these real workers? Or are they those red painted iron jockey ring holding figures?

And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
& maybe they'd be happy for a while.

A pool guy? Well, I know where I'll be crashing when I come to town! Just call me "Cabana Boy".

I just want you to remember that I was nice to you BEFORE I found out you were rich!

Oh, and since Crash did his riff, allow me to do the same with my favorite lines from the song:

And the three men I admire most
Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Caught the last train for the coast
The Day the music died

It's a good thing that The Beach Boys passed on this song. They couldn't have done it justice the way Don did.

American Pie is not just a great song, but a phenominal album.

When I was a young child of five or six, my father took my mother, brother & friend Scott to see Don McClean perform live (solo acoustic) at the South Street Seaport. Just him a bench & his guitar.

My first concert--I'll never forget it. The entire audience brought picnic blankets and sat down for the show.

In the middle of "Starry Starry Night," Don McClean stopped playing and told me and my brother to shut up.

Crash...that is a funny story. Now here is a weird coincidence. Don Mclean was MY first concert ever too! Not at Southstreet though, we saw him at the Schaefer Music Festival at Wollman Rink in Central Park in 1971. Bill Withers (lean On Me) was the warm up act. I have pictures in my old photo album taken with my instamatic..remember those flash bars that sat on top? Funny!

McLean didn't tell me to shut up though!
